Frequently Asked Questions

1.     What is a web site?

At this point, most business have a web site, so everyone should know this one.  Every business today should have a website, even if all it does is provide some background and a description of the company.  A web site is not an end goal in and of itself.  It needs to be maintained, updated and kept current.  Your website should expand as your business does.

2.     What are content management systems (CMS')?

Content management systems are web site platforms that allow the web site owner or user to update his or her own site without having to write code or hire a developer.  They are usually very flexible and database-driven.   The three top CMS's (open source) are Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal.  I prefer Drupal, but all of them are good.  It just really depends on what you want to do and what you're comfortable with.

3.     What is open source software?

Open source software is software that is free to use and often very high-quality.   Examples are Open Office, Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal and so on.  Wikipedia is also based on this model.  They are fairly high quality and developed by thousands of people around the world who contribute their time to help create a better system.   The advantage of open source software is that is it is free, flexible and often fairly robust.   The disadvantage is that you usually need to work with a company to provide you support for the software and ongoing maintenance. 4.     What is Drupal?

Drupal is one of the leading CMS's in the world.  It is open source (free) and very robust and flexible.   Some of the organizations that use Drupal are:  the White House; Harvard, Fedex, Nike, Amnesty International, Fast Company, Adobe, Mercedes Benz and so on.  Go to Drupal Showcase to see other sites that run on Drupal and what it can do.

5.    What is LAMP?

LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.  It is an acronym referring to the systems that web sites may run on.  LAMP is based on UNIX, which is a operating system that supports many of the world's largest systems.   Windows is another very common operating system.   Most Windows web sites use the .NET framework, as opposed to LAMP.

6.     What is an App?

App is short for application.  An app is a program, just like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Calculator, Mail, Outlook and so on.  Applications are files that do things on the computer.  They can create all sorts of things.  Generally, if you don't require another program to open it - it's an app.  There are apps for the iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and even Windows 8.   Apps have always existed. They just weren't called apps.   What an app is NOT is a mobile version of your website.   You can create an app that will display your website, but it's not a good way to do it.  Your website should look fine no matter what the device - an iPad, computer, Android or iPhone.  Your visitors shouldn't have to download an app just to see your site.

7.   What is custom application development?

This is just a fancy way of saying programming.  It can be a system that was developed just for your company, or a software that you buy that needs some tweaking.  Sometimes you can just buy software and it will work, like Word or Excel.  But often as you grow, you find that the systems you use to manage and run your company need to be adjusted to fit. Think of it as buying a suit and having it altered to fit you.  Sometimes you can wear the suit and it fits just fine, other times you need to have the pants hemmed or the waist taken in so that the suit fits correctly.
